Thiago Silva’s parting gift to Chelsea as defender prepares for transfer exit

Thiago Silva’s son claimed a piece of silverware with Chelsea on Thursday evening, giving his father a fitting send-off as he prepares to leave the Blues.

It was announced earlier this week Silva would be exiting the capital after four years at the club – during which time he claimed three trophies- returning to the club he began his career at: Fluminense. While Silva may be calling time on his career at Chelsea, his two sons (Isago and Iago) are both on the books of the Blues, following in the footsteps of their dad.

Silva’s eldest son, Isago, helped Chelsea under-15s win the Premier League Floodlit Super Cup on Thursday after overcoming Leeds United. This competition was introduced by the Premier League to provide young players with experience of evening matches under floodlights in varied weather conditions.

It remains to be seen what happens regarding the careers of Silva’s two sons as their family prepare to return to their native country of Brazil. A report by the Daily Mirror late last year suggested the 39-year-old may have snubbed a return home due to Isago’s contract not expiring until 2025.

Describing this dilemma, Silva told Ge GLobo last year: “Everyone knows how much I would like to return to Fluminense, but today it’s hard to talk to my family [about it] because my children don’t want to live in Brazil. It’s a very complicated situation, but we still have a year to reflect and understand what we’re going to do next year.”

Explaining what a loss the veteran centre-back will be, Chelsea defender Benoit Badiashile this week admitted: “Of course [I am trying to learn from him. I think you already know [what a loss it will be]. Thiago is a great player and we already know how great he is.

“It will be a great miss for us but we have to continue to work. That’s life, we have to continue. You can see when I play with him I am more confident but I have to try to be the same player without him because he can’t be without me throughout my career. He has helped me a lot but I will try to do my best without him.”
