Browns Cut Ties With Pro Bowler After Week 1 Blowout

The Cleveland Browns have made several roster moves following a disappointing Week 1 performance. Cornerback Justin Hardee Sr. and receiver Tulu Griffin were released from the practice squad, while tight end Geoff Swaim was added to the practice squad. Hardee, a Pro Bowler in 2022 as a special teams ace, has rarely played on defense but has made a name for himself on special teams.

The Browns’ decision to release Hardee and Griffin comes as they look to shake up their roster after a lackluster Week 1 performance. Hardee, who spent the 2023 season with the New York Jets, has experience playing on special teams and could be a valuable asset to another team.

The addition of Swaim, who worked out for the team on Tuesday, provides much-needed depth at tight end. David Njoku, the team’s starting tight end, suffered an ankle injury against the Dallas Cowboys and is expected to miss some time. The exact timeline for Njoku’s return is uncertain, leaving the Browns to explore other options.

“We’re working through all those types of things today and tomorrow,” Browns coach Kevin Stefanski said on Monday. “But we have options, and we’ll work through them.”

Veteran tight end Jordan Akins would likely see an increased workload if Njoku misses time. Akins has experience playing in the NFL and could provide a steady presence at tight end.

In addition to the moves at tight end, the Browns also added linebacker Khaleke Hudson to the active roster from the New Orleans Saints practice squad. The move comes as linebackers Tony Fields II and Mohamoud Diabate are expected to miss time due to injury.

The Browns’ roster shuffle is a clear indication that the team is looking to make changes after a disappointing Week 1 performance. With several key players injured, the team is exploring all options to ensure they have the necessary depth to compete.

As the Browns move forward, they will be looking to find the right combination of players to help them succeed. With several new faces on the roster, it will be interesting to see how the team comes together in the coming weeks.

In terms of the tight end position, the Browns have several options to consider. Akins, as mentioned, would likely see an increased workload if Njoku misses time. Swaim, the newest addition to the practice squad, could also be an option.

At linebacker, Hudson’s addition provides much-needed depth. With Fields II and Diabate expected to miss time, Hudson could see significant playing time in the coming weeks.

As the Browns continue to navigate the challenges of the NFL season, one thing is clear – they are committed to finding the right combination of players to help them succeed. With several roster moves already made, it will be interesting to see what other changes the team makes in the coming weeks.
