The New England Patriots are adjusting their linebacker corps due to Ja’Whaun Bentley’s injury. Bentley suffered a torn pectoral muscle, forcing the team to reassign roles.
To address the void, the Patriots turned to safety Kyle Dugger as their on-field signal caller against the Seattle Seahawks. However, for their Thursday night game against the New York Jets, linebacker Jahlani Tavai will take over this responsibility.
Head coach Jerod Mayo confirmed Tavai’s new role on 98.5 The Sports Hub, noting that Dugger remains an option but Tavai will be the primary communication hub. Tavai, a former Detroit Lions second-round draft pick, joined the Patriots in 2021 via the practice squad.
Tavai has developed into a key contributor to the Patriots’ defense. With Bentley sidelined, Tavai’s expanded role will be crucial in maintaining the unit’s cohesion and effectiveness. His experience and growth within the system make him an ideal candidate to assume this critical responsibility.
