The Boston Bruins have placed defenseman Ian Mitchell on waivers, intending to assign him to the AHL’s Providence Bruins. Mitchell started the season on Boston’s injured non-roster list but has since returned to full health.
Mitchell joined the Bruins in 2023 through a trade with the Chicago Blackhawks, along with Alec Regula, in exchange for Taylor Hall and Nick Foligno.
Before joining Boston, Mitchell accumulated 82 NHL games and 16 points with the Blackhawks. His first season with the Bruins was split between the NHL and AHL.
In 13 games with Boston, Mitchell scored two points. However, he found more success in the minors, recording six goals and 24 points in 42 games with Providence.
Mitchell’s minor-league performance was impressive, falling just 11 points shy of his career-high set in 57 games with Rockford in 2021-22.
Originally drafted in the second round of the 2017 NHL Draft, Mitchell spent three impactful years at the University of Denver. He notched 89 points in 116 games on the Pioneers’ blue line.
Despite struggling to replicate his collegiate production at the pro level, Mitchell may see an increased role with Providence this season.
With Mason Lohrei’s promotion to an everyday NHL role, Mitchell could capitalize on the opportunity to become a key contributor for the Providence Bruins.
