Coco Gauff, fresh from her China Open victory, has advanced to the Wuhan Open quarter-finals, eyeing consecutive title wins. The 20-year-old tennis sensation drew inspiration from WNBA star A’ja Wilson.
Gauff, an avid basketball fan, found motivation in Wilson’s attitude despite the Las Vegas Aces’ recent playoff loss. Wilson’s response to defeat resonated with Gauff, who reflected on her own tennis journey.
Gauff noted that success in sports is fleeting, emphasizing the importance of learning from losses. “People have great moments and bad moments in sports; it doesn’t define everything,” she said.
Gauff praised Wilson’s humility, acknowledging the challenges of maintaining a winning streak. “A’ja Wilson said it’s hard to stay winning all the time,” Gauff shared.
The tennis star emphasized the need for fans to accept that losses are part of growth. “Tennis fans need to be more accepting of that,” Gauff stated.
Despite facing challenges this year, Gauff remains focused on finishing the season strong. Her French Open semi-final appearance and doubles win propelled her to world No. 2 in June.
Gauff’s determination and newfound perspective, fueled by Wilson’s example, will likely drive her pursuit of another title at the Wuhan Open.
