Russell Wilson or Justin Fields? There’s a case for either

The Pittsburgh Steelers’ quarterback situation has been a topic of discussion for months, and it doesn’t seem to be resolving anytime soon. Despite Justin Fields’ impressive performance, leading the team to a 4-2 record in six starts, Russell Wilson’s potential return has raised questions about who will start in the upcoming Week 7 prime-time matchup against the New York Jets.

Coach Mike Tomlin’s decision to consider Wilson for the starting role has sparked debate among fans and analysts. Fields has been instrumental in the Steelers’ success, showcasing his exceptional mobility and accuracy. However, Tomlin’s loyalty to Wilson, who has been recovering from a calf injury, has kept the quarterback competition alive.

Tomlin emphasized that Fields has been “really good” but not great, and the team wants to explore options to become a top-tier team. This suggests that Tomlin believes Wilson’s experience and skillset could provide an extra edge. However, Fields’ impressive stats and game-changing plays have made a strong case for him to remain the starter.

Fields’ mobility has been a significant factor in the Steelers’ success, with five rushing touchdowns, the most by a Steelers quarterback through six games since Kordell Stewart in 1997. His ability to extend plays and make something out of nothing has taken pressure off the injured offensive line. Left tackle Dan Moore praised Fields, saying, “When you’ve got a guy like that who can make plays with his feet, it takes pressure off of us.”

Despite some off-target throws, Fields has been accurate, ranking 13th in completion percentage (66.5%) and 14th in air yards per attempt (7.3). His touchdown-to-interception ratio is also impressive, with five touchdown passes and only one interception. Fields’ ability to limit turnovers has been crucial in the Steelers’ wins.

On the other hand, Wilson’s historical strength as a deep-ball passer could provide a new dynamic to the Steelers’ offense. However, Tomlin acknowledged that Wilson doesn’t possess the same running ability as Fields. This raises questions about whether Wilson’s skills align with the team’s current game plan.

Tomlin’s policy of not unseating starters due to injury has kept Wilson listed as the starting quarterback on the depth chart. This decision has been consistent throughout Tomlin’s tenure, and it’s unclear if he’ll make an exception this time. Wilson’s leadership and experience are valuable assets, but Fields’ momentum and chemistry with the team may outweigh those factors.

As the Steelers prepare for their Week 7 matchup, Tomlin wants to evaluate Wilson’s readiness to return by seeing him with the first-team offense. This assessment will help determine whether Wilson can regain his starting role or if Fields will continue to lead the team. The quarterback situation remains uncertain, leaving fans and analysts eagerly awaiting Tomlin’s decision.
