Liverpool edged past Chelsea 2-1 in an intriguing battle at Anfield to continue their impressive start under Arne Slot.
Diogo Jota went off injured in the only real negative for Liverpool, who went ahead through a Mohamed Salah penalty.
Nicolas Jackson equalised for the Blues, but Curtis Jones was on hand to secure all three points for the home side at Anfield.
Chelsea have impressed Virgil van Dijk this season, but Enzo Maresca’s side just fell short in their latest Premier League clash.
Liverpool are now a point clear of Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table, with seven wins from their nine matches under Slot.
Gary Neville wanted Mohamed Salah yellow card for dive vs Chelsea
In an action-packed first half, the Anfield faithful felt they deserved a penalty after Salah went down in the box in the 26th minute.
But referee John Brooks waved away his appeals, with Gary Neville left really surprised that the Liverpool star was not shown a yellow card for simulation.
“Why hasn’t Salah been booked?” he said on Sky Sports Main Event (4.58pm, 20 October). “He has thrown himself to the ground.”
Mohamed Salah helps Liverpool beat Chelsea 2-1
Former Premier League referee Mike Dean meanwhile agreed with the matchday official, but did not agree with Neville’s yellow card verdict.
“Salah is looking for a penalty kick,” he said. “It’s definitely not a penalty. Because he’s put his leg across, there is some contact but not enough for a penalty – and not enough to say it’s simulation. It’s the right decision in my opinion.”
Remarkably, the Egyptian did get his way just moments after, with Levi Colwill fouling Curtis Jones in the box.
The winger fired his penalty home to put the hosts ahead, with Jones rewarded for his hard work all match with the winning goal.
Salah joined Liverpool for £34million from Roma in 2017, with the winger going on to become an Anfield legend.
Worryingly, his contract will expire at the end of the season, with Reds fans desperate for an extension to be announced soon.
