Matheus Nunes takes swipe at Wolves fans on social media after controversial Man City defeat

Wolves were left deflated after suffering a late defeat to Manchester City at Molineux.

Gary O’Neil watched his side battle the champions for 90 minutes, taking the game to Pep Guardiola’s squad to so nearly earn a point.

Goals from Jorgen Strand Larsen and Josko Gvardiol saw the fixture tied at 1-1 for the majority until John Stones scored a last-minute winner in controversial circumstances.

Chris Kavanagh ruled the goal out for offside due to Bernardo Silva’s positioning however, VAR advised the on-field decision to be reviewed, seeing the goal given at the death.

Suffering a fifth-consecutive loss in the dying embers was agonising for the hosts, with matters not made easier by the nature of the goal.

Tensions rose inside Molineux after the goal was awarded, as the away end went into pandemonium to the disgust of the home supporters.

The fans were loud and proud in support of their team, making their opinions known throughout the game, with the stadium erupting with boos when a certain Matheus Nunes entered the field of play.

The former Wolves midfielder came onto the pitch to a wall of hostility, seeing the 26-year-old hit back at fans after the defeat on social media.

Nunes took to Instagram to celebrate his side’s late win, captioning a photo of himself cupping his ears by saying, “What a WIN! What a feeling to win this game! C’mon Citeh.”

The Portugal international, who was sold to City in the 2023 transfer window, then posted a zoomed-in version of the photo of him taunting the home crowd on his Instagram story, making it known that he enjoyed the victory at Molineux.

Wolves must build on Man City defeat
While the result will tell you that Wolves sit bottom of the table with just one point after eight games played, the bigger picture tells a different story.

O’Neil’s side went toe-to-toe with the champions at Molineux, putting in a solid 90 minute performance, which is something that hasn’t been seen this season.

So often, the Old Gold have merely impressed in spells, making the display against City something to applaud rather than a result to loath.

The key is to now build on what was produced against Guardiola’s 2023 treble winners, with there a platform for a resurgence or a relegation battle to develop based on the squad’s next steps.
