Chelsea can count themselves a touch unlucky not to have got something out of their trip to Anfield to take on Liverpool on Sunday.
Enzo Maresca’s men, as they have done for much of the season so far, turned in a fine performance but ultimately left pointless from their trip north. A Mohamed Salah penalty, after Levi Colwill tripped Curtis Jones, and a Jones strike won the day for the Reds, whowere awarded another panelty on the day, only for VAR to overturn it.
Maresca admitted after the game he was pleased with the performance, if not the final result. he said: “I think the performance was very good. We don’t like losing games, dropping points but if you have to decide the way, then this is probably the way. I’ve been in the stadium many times and have seen Liverpool for a long time, it’s not easy.
“I think overall, we controlled the game and for most parts of the game we dominated the game, but we lost. We are not happy. We don’t like [it] but as I said, the performance on and off the ball was very good.”
Nicolas Jackson scored the Blues goal on Merseyside, equalising for Chelsea soon after half-time. Parity would not last long though as Jones struck soon after that to secure all three points for Arne Slot’s side.
That made it five goals and three assists in eight Premier League games for Jackson, who sent a message to his teammates and the Blues supporters after the match.
Taking to his Instragram account, the Chelsea striker posted a defiant three-word message in the wake of the Liverpool defeat. He wrote: “We keep fighting.”
