Drake Maye injury update: Patriots QB limited along with 12 teammates

As he seeks to bounce back from a concussion, Drake Maye was a limited participant in New England’s first practice of the week on Wednesday afternoon.

Prior to practice, coach Jerod Mayo said Maye wouldn’t be on the field for more than 30 minutes, indicating that he’s likely in Phase 3 of the NFL’s 5-step concussion protocol. If Maye is able to clear the protocol by Sunday, it sound like Mayo would have no issue with him suiting up against the Titans.

“He will throw the ball at times in practice today, but he will be limited,” Mayo said. “There are people a lot smarter than me as far as clearing people with concussions, and we’ll lean on our medical professionals, and also the NFL league policy, as far as getting him ready to play.

“I do have confidence that, if the league says he’s ready to play, that he will be able to go out there and operate. In saying that, I feel very comfortable putting Jacoby [Brissett] in there, as he is a professional and always stays ready, as you could see from the last game. However that plays out, we’ll see.”

The Patriots had three players not participate at all in Wednesday’s practice: Starting left tackle Vederian Lowe, who is now dealing with a new shoulder injury in addition to an ankle issue, linebacker Christian Elliss (abdomen) and defensive tackle Jaquelin Roy (neck).

In positive news, New England got rookie wideout Ja’Lynn Polk (concussion) and second-year cornerback Alex Austin (ankle, injured reserve) back. They were both limited participants, and the 21-day clock to activate Austin off injured reserve has now begun.

“Feels great, man,” Austin said. “Excited for sure. Just ready to go back out there and have fun. Definitely missed being out there with the guys. Ready to contribute to getting this thing going and getting some more wins.”
