Georgia football assistant named new Dallas Cowboys head coach

In a surprising turn of events, former Georgia football assistant coach Brian Schottenheimer has been announced as the new head coach of the Dallas Cowboys. This move marks a rare transition from the college ranks to the NFL, as most college coaches tend to prefer working their way up the collegiate ladder rather than making the leap to the professional league.

Schottenheimer’s background, however, is an exception to this trend. Despite his brief stint as Georgia’s Offensive Coordinator in 2015, he has spent the majority of his coaching career in the NFL. His decision to join the Bulldogs’ staff was unexpected, and his tenure was short-lived, lasting only one season.

During his time in Athens, Schottenheimer’s offense struggled to find consistency, averaging a mere 26.3 points per game. This was a significant decline from the previous season, and the team’s performance in their two biggest games against Florida and Alabama was particularly underwhelming. The offense’s poor showing in these games likely contributed to newly appointed head coach Kirby Smart’s decision not to retain Schottenheimer on his staff.

Despite his limited success in the college ranks, Schottenheimer’s extensive experience in the NFL made him an attractive candidate for the Cowboys’ head coaching position. His ability to adapt to the professional game and lead a team at the highest level will be closely watched, and his appointment marks an exciting new chapter in his coaching career.

As Schottenheimer embarks on this new challenge, he will be expected to draw upon his wealth of experience in the NFL to guide the Cowboys to success. His ability to motivate and inspire his players, as well as his strategic acumen, will be crucial in determining the team’s fortunes under his leadership.

The appointment of Schottenheimer as the Cowboys’ head coach serves as a reminder that coaching careers can be unpredictable and multifaceted. While his time in Georgia may not have been an unqualified success, his experience in the NFL has provided him with the skills and expertise necessary to take on a high-profile role like this. As he begins his new tenure with the Cowboys, Schottenheimer will be eager to prove himself as a top-tier coach in the NFL.
