Lindsey Vonn, the legendary American skier, saw her bid for a ninth world medal come to an abrupt end as she bombed out of the super-G event at the World Championships in Saalbach, Austria. Vonn, who was making her comeback from retirement after a successful knee operation, was unable to navigate the challenging 2.1km-long Uli Maier course, clattering into a gate and ultimately failing to finish the run.

In contrast, Austria’s Stephanie Venier produced a stunning performance to claim the gold medal, finishing 0.10 seconds ahead of Italian veteran Federica Brignone. The bronze medal was shared between Norway’s Kajsa Vickhoff Lie and rising American star Lauren Macuga, who both finished 0.24 seconds off Venier’s pace.

Vonn, who was wearing bib number 30, had been hoping to make a strong comeback after her retirement, but her timing was off, and she struggled to find her rhythm on the course. Despite her disappointment, Vonn was gracious in defeat, acknowledging that she had taken a gamble by trying out a different boot, which ultimately didn’t pay off.

The American skier, who has been battling a cold, was seen nursing her right arm after making contact with the gate pole, but she was able to ski down unaided and received a warm welcome from the crowd in the finish area.

Venier’s victory was a highlight of the day, with the Austrian skier producing a flawless run to claim her first world title. The partisan crowd erupted in joy as Venier’s intermediate times flashed up green, indicating that she was the fastest skier on the course.

The victory was a testament to Venier’s skill and determination, and it marked a stunning start to the World Championships for the host nation. The Austrian team has been in impressive form, and Venier’s win has set the tone for what promises to be an exciting and competitive championships.

As for Vonn, she will have to regroup and refocus ahead of her next event, the downhill, which takes place on Saturday. Despite her disappointment in the super-G, Vonn remains a formidable force in the world of skiing, and she will be looking to bounce back with a strong performance in the downhill.

In the end, it was a day of mixed fortunes for the American team, with Lauren Macuga’s bronze medal providing a welcome boost after Vonn’s disappointment. As the World Championships continue, the American team will be looking to build on Macuga’s success and bring home more medals in the remaining events.
