The Texas Tech Red Raiders men’s tennis team delivered a convincing performance on Saturday evening, defeating the UC San Diego Tritons 4-1 on day two of the Ed Collins Invitational at the Hogan Tennis Center. This impressive win marks the Red Raiders’ eighth victory of the season, improving their overall record to 8-5.
The Red Raiders set the tone for the match by securing the doubles point against the Tritons. The pairing of Niksa Arsic and Thiago Guglieri led the charge, defeating David Adamson and Robert Freedman 6-3 at court three. Despite trailing 1-2 early on, Arsic and Guglieri rallied to take a 3-2 lead and ultimately sealed the win.
The No. 80 ranked duo of Sebastian Abboud and Piotr Pawlak clinched the doubles point for the Red Raiders, outlasting Pelayo Rodriguez and Zach Pellouchoud 6-3 at court one. After falling behind 0-2, Abboud and Pawlak won four consecutive games to take a 4-2 lead, breaking the Triton duo’s serve to secure the win.
In singles competition, the Red Raiders extended their lead to 3-0, courtesy of victories at courts five and six. Abboud dominated his match against Adamson at court five, winning in straight sets (6-4, 6-1). After overcoming a 0-2 deficit in the first set, Abboud rallied to win four of the next five games, ultimately taking the set 6-4. He then cruised through the second set, winning 6-1.
