Caitlin Clark, the 2024 WNBA Rookie of the Year, is getting some much-needed support from her new teammate Sophie Cunningham. Cunningham, a veteran guard who recently joined the Indiana Fever, is vowing to have Clark’s back and help alleviate some of the pressure that comes with being one of the league’s top players .
According to Cunningham, Clark has “changed the game in the best possible way” and is eager to support her in any way she can. “I want her to go do her thing, and anything she needs from me, I’m gonna be here,” Cunningham said. “I stick up for my teammates. I stick up for myself” .
Cunningham’s comments are a welcome relief for Clark, who faced intense physical play and intimidation tactics from some of the league’s veterans during her rookie season. The addition of Cunningham, who averaged 7.7 points and 2.7 rebounds per game while shooting 36.2% from three last season, is expected to bring some much-needed grit and floor spacing to the Fever squad.
But Cunningham’s impact goes beyond just her stats. She’s a fierce competitor who isn’t afraid to speak her mind and stand up for herself and her teammates. As she said, “Sometimes, I think that’s okay to be feisty and be yourself”.
With Cunningham by her side, Clark can focus on doing what she does best: dominating on the court. And with the Fever’s revamped roster, which includes other notable additions like DeWanna Bonner and Natasha Howard, the team is looking poised to make a deep run in the playoffs.
