One year ago, the Minnesota Twins began a collapse that hasn’t ended. On Aug 18 last season, Jorge Alcala blew a four-run lead vs. Rangers. The Twins were 70-53 (.569), with >90% playoff odds. Since Aug 17 last year, they’ve played 163 games, going 70-93 (.429), second-worst in AL behind White Sox. Despite a May 13-game win streak, they’re 58-66 overall, 32-46 since the streak ended, 11-17 post-All-Star break.
The Twins lost a playoff spot last season with a 12-27 collapse. Poor play continued this year. After trading 40% of the roster at the deadline, they’re 7-9. Manager Rocco Baldelli reflects on the anniversary, stressing 2024 and 2025 are separate. He attributes last season’s issues partly to injuries of stars Byron Buxton, Carlos Correa, Joe Ryan.
Baldelli doesn’t connect last season’s end to this season much, though says it’s hard to separate. He notes no one-sentence explanation for struggles. “Frankly, we just have to play better,” Baldelli said. He takes responsibility for the team’s performance.
The Pohlads pulled the franchise off the market. Twins president Derek Falvey’s job seems secure. Baldelli’s contract option for 2026 was exercised. Baldelli says they’ll “have to perform” better.
