Aryna Sabalenka’s Racket-Throwing Outburst Overshadows Dramatic Wuhan Open Semifinal Loss to Jessica Pegula

World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka narrowly escaped disqualification during a fiery semifinal at the Wuhan Open after hurling her racket toward the players’ benches in a moment of frustration, nearly striking a ball boy and a cameraman. The Belarusian star, chasing a historic fourth straight title at the tournament (2018, 2019, 2024), ultimately fell to American Jessica Pegula in a thrilling 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 upset, ending her bid for another championship in a match that had the tennis world buzzing.

Sabalenka, 27, appeared poised for victory, leading 5-2 in the decisive third set against Pegula, the 31-year-old Buffalo Bills heiress and world No. 5. But the tide turned dramatically as Pegula mounted a stunning comeback, reeling off three consecutive games to level the score at 5-5. The momentum shifted further when Sabalenka, after a grueling rally, sent a volley wide, handing Pegula a second break and a 6-5 lead. Visibly enraged, Sabalenka launched her racket toward the bench area, prompting gasps from the crowd and a stern warning from the umpire for racket abuse.

“That’s dangerous territory for Sabalenka,” a Sky Sports commentator noted as replays showed the racket narrowly missing a ball boy and a cameraman before crashing into the bench and bouncing back onto the court. Sabalenka quickly raised her hand in apology, a gesture that likely spared her from default, as striking an individual would have ended her match on the spot. “She’s lucky it’s just a warning,” the commentator added, noting the match’s sudden intensity.

Despite the controversy, Sabalenka was given a lifeline when Pegula faltered while serving for the match, coughing up four double faults to allow Sabalenka to break back and force a tiebreak. Known for her tiebreak dominance—having won an astonishing 19 in a row—Sabalenka couldn’t maintain her streak. Pegula, fueled by her late surge, outlasted the top seed in a gripping tiebreak to secure a 7-6(3) victory after two hours of high-octane tennis.

Pegula, whose family owns the NFL’s Buffalo Bills and NHL’s Buffalo Sabres, showcased resilience in overcoming Sabalenka’s power game and emotional volatility. The American’s tactical precision and composure under pressure marked one of her biggest wins of the season, propelling her into the Wuhan Open final.

Sabalenka’s outburst drew mixed reactions online, with 27 comments on a related X post reflecting the polarized sentiment. Some fans criticized her lack of control, with one writing, “That racket throw was reckless—could’ve hurt someone.” Others defended her passion, noting, “She’s human, not a robot. Pressure got to her.” The incident overshadowed her otherwise dominant run in Wuhan, where she had been a fan favorite after the tournament’s four-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

As Pegula advances to face the winner of the other semifinal, Sabalenka will look to regroup ahead of the WTA Finals. The loss snaps her 15-match winning streak at Wuhan and raises questions about her composure under pressure as the season nears its climax.
