Former world No. 1 Simona Halep has revealed that retirement is increasingly on her mind as persistent injuries continue to hamper her return to professional tennis. The two-time Grand Slam champion, who has faced significant challenges since her doping ban was lifted in February 2024, admitted that her ongoing knee and shoulder issues are taking a toll.
Halep, now 33, has competed in just two WTA Tour-level matches since her comeback—a first-round loss at the Miami Open in March 2024 and another at the Hong Kong Tennis Open in October. Starting the 2025 season ranked outside the top 800, she received a wildcard for the Australian Open qualifiers but withdrew due to lingering injuries. “Retirement crosses my mind often,” Halep told Golazo.ro. “I’m getting older, and my injuries, especially my knee, aren’t healing.”
The Romanian star, who was sidelined for the entire 2023 season following a doping suspension for testing positive for roxadustat at the 2022 US Open, remains philosophical about her career. “Tennis isn’t everything,” she said. “I’ve had an extraordinary career, worked hard, and feel fulfilled as a player. I’m excited about exploring new goals beyond tennis.”
Halep’s achievements speak for themselves. She claimed the 2017 French Open and 2018 Wimbledon titles, reached three other Grand Slam finals, and held the world No. 1 ranking.
