Renowned guitarist Jake E. Lee has shared a candid reflection on his physical and emotional recovery following a traumatic shooting incident in October 2024. The former Ozzy Osbourne band member was shot three times while walking his dog in his neighborhood, an event that left him grappling with both physical injuries and a shifted perspective on life.
The incident occurred during an early morning walk when Lee encountered two individuals attempting to steal his neighbor’s motorcycle. After a verbal confrontation, the assailants opened fire, striking Lee three times. Miraculously, he survived and was rushed to intensive care. Among the injuries, a shot to his left forearm was particularly concerning for the guitarist, as it threatened his ability to play. “The first shot hit my left forearm, entering below the elbow and exiting the top. It felt like a burn, not too painful, just a quick sensation,” Lee explained on SiriusXM’s Ozzy’s Boneyard. “It missed bones and my elbow joint, and it’s healed remarkably fast. The scars are barely noticeable, and my fingers still work well.”
Despite initial numbness in the back of his hand, Lee has regained much of his functionality and expressed gratitude that his dog was unharmed and the damage to his fretting arm was minimal. His resilience shone through as he returned to the stage at Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath’s farewell concert, performing classics like “The Ultimate Sin” and “Shot in the Dark” with his playing ability intact.
However, Lee revealed that the shooting took a toll on his mental health, darkening his view of the world. “I dwelled on it a bit afterward, and I realized it wasn’t healthy,” he shared. “The world felt darker, more dangerous, less fun after that night. But I’ve pushed it aside, and I’m slowly finding joy again.” Lee also noted that his recent guitar-playing challenges stemmed not from the shooting but from arthritis in his wrist, which he had been managing through rehabilitation before the incident.
Lee’s recovery, both physical and emotional, highlights his determination to move forward. His return to performing and his ongoing healing process serve as a testament to his strength in the face of adversity.
