Mikaela Shiffrin Primed for World Cup Return as Brignone’s Injury Shakes Up Title Race

The women’s Alpine Skiing World Cup is set for a dramatic season as Mikaela Shiffrin, the 101-time race winner, prepares to hit the slopes with renewed energy, while the absence of Italy’s Federica Brignone due to a broken leg leaves the overall title race wide open. Shiffrin, who plans to focus primarily on technical events like slalom and giant slalom, hinted at a potential return to Super G later in the season, adding intrigue to her campaign.

Brignone, a standout performer and one of Shiffrin’s fiercest rivals, will be sidelined until at least January 2026 after suffering a leg injury, creating a significant void in the competition. This development has shifted the spotlight to Shiffrin, who is coming off a remarkable recovery from a harrowing crash in Killington, USA, in November 2024. Despite that setback, the American skiing superstar closed out last season with two record-breaking World Cup victories, further cementing her legacy as one of the sport’s all-time greats.

“I’m feeling really upbeat and full of energy right now,” Shiffrin shared during a recent interview. “It’s exciting, but it can also feel a bit daunting. You worry about things not going as planned and the embarrassment that might come with it. But mostly, I’m just thankful to be in this positive headspace. Now it’s time to get back to racing.”

Shiffrin’s cautious optimism reflects her determination to build on her storied career while navigating the pressures of her high-profile return. Her focus on technical events, where she has historically dominated, positions her as a frontrunner, though her potential Super G comeback could add another dimension to her season.

With Brignone out and Shiffrin ready to race, the World Cup circuit is poised for an unpredictable battle. Fans are buzzing on X, eagerly anticipating Shiffrin’s first competitive runs and speculating on who else might seize the opportunity in Brignone’s absence. As the season kicks off, all eyes will be on Shiffrin to see if she can harness her momentum and add to her historic win tally.
