Aleksander Aamodt Kilde, the Norwegian alpine skiing star, has officially put the rumor mill to rest: he and American legend Mikaela Shiffrin are engaged.
Speaking to reporters on the eve of the Birds of Prey World Cup downhill, the 33-year-old Kilde recounted the moment he proposed atop a sun-drenched Austrian glacier last month. “I just looked at her and said, ‘I know you’re the woman of my life, and that’s gonna happen,’” he recalled, a grin breaking across his face. “She said yes before I even got the ring out.”
Shiffrin, 30, who was training slalom gates nearby, confirmed the news with her trademark understatement. “It felt right,” the five-time overall World Cup champion told NRK. “We’ve been through a lot together—crashes, comebacks, everything. This is the next chapter.”
The couple, who went public in 2021, have become alpine skiing’s most watched power duo. Between them they own 11 overall Crystal Globes, 134 World Cup victories, and three Olympic golds. Their relationship has weathered Kilde’s horrific 2024 Wengen crash and Shiffrin’s 2023 knee injury, moments that both say deepened their bond.
When asked how they’ll balance wedding planning with a 45-race World Cup calendar, Kilde laughed. “We’ll probably get married on a Tuesday between Kitzbühel and Cortina. That’s the only free weekend.”
Shiffrin’s mother and coach Eileen, ever the strategist, has already reserved the glacier for a possible summer ceremony. “As long as there’s no fog delay,” she quipped.
The alpine world reacted instantly. Lindsey Vonn posted a heart-eyes emoji on Shiffrin’s Instagram, while Marcel Hirscher texted Kilde: “Finally, someone who can keep up with you on the hill and off it.”
Kilde returns to World Cup downhill competition this weekend for the first time since his crash. He’ll wear bib 17—and, tucked inside his speed suit, the engagement ring on a chain until race day is done.
Shiffrin, meanwhile, opens her season in Levi, Finland, in ten days. Her answer to whether she’ll race with a new piece of jewelry? “Only if it’s aerodynamic.”
Love, it seems, is the fastest line down the mountain.
