American skiing superstar Mikaela Shiffrin, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, returns to the slopes this weekend in Gurgl, Austria, chasing her second consecutive slalom victory in the 2025/26 FIS Alpine Ski World Cup season. Coming off a commanding win in the season opener in Levi, Finland, on November 15 — her 102nd career World Cup triumph — Shiffrin remains the clear favorite on the demanding, high-altitude course known for its steep pitches and reliable early-season snow.
The Gurgl slalom, set against the stunning backdrop of the Ötztal Alps, promises high drama with its rapidly steepening terrain that often produces thrilling races and unexpected turns.
Shiffrin will face stiff competition from a talented field of emerging stars. Nineteen-year-old Albanian sensation Lara Colturi, who claimed second place in Levi, is building momentum early in the season. Germany’s Emma Aicher, 22, celebrated her first World Cup podium with a third-place finish in Levi and will look to carry that form forward.
Switzerland’s Camille Rast, last year’s third-place finisher in Gurgl and the reigning slalom world champion, aims to bounce back from a tougher start in Levi. Despite dealing with hip issues, Rast has shared on social media that she’s focused on regaining full confidence.
The U.S. team boasts impressive depth beyond Shiffrin, with Paula Moltzan leading the charge after a strong second-place result in the Sölden giant slalom and a sixth-place showing in Gurgl last season. She’ll be supported by teammates Nina O’Brien, AJ Hurt, Liv Moritz, and Annika Hunt, all eager to climb the leaderboard in the young season.
