American skiing superstar Mikaela Shiffrin will return to racing in her home state of Colorado for the first time in eight years when the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup visits Copper Mountain for the Stifel Copper Cup over Thanksgiving weekend.
The two-time Olympic champion and reigning slalom world leader tops the women’s field in Saturday’s giant slalom and Sunday’s slalom, the only U.S. stops on the women’s World Cup calendar this season. Copper Mountain has not hosted a women’s World Cup event since 2017 or any World Cup races since 2001.
Shiffrin arrives in dominant slalom form, having won the first two slalom races of the 2025-26 season by margins exceeding one second each time. Since January 2024, she has taken 10 of the 12 slaloms she has finished, a streak interrupted only by injury absences. The giant slalom will provide a sterner test; her fourth-place finish in the season opener in Sölden last month marked her best GS result since a serious crash in November 2024 sidelined her for two months.
Joining Shiffrin on the U.S. women’s team is Paula Moltzan, who stunned the skiing world with a runner-up finish in the Sölden GS and has rapidly emerged as a medal contender after earning World Championship bronze last season.
The men open the weekend with a super-G on Thursday and giant slalom on Friday. Swiss phenom Marco Odermatt, winner of the last four giant slalom crystal globes and three consecutive super-G titles, is the clear favorite. There is also intrigue surrounding Norway’s Aleksander Aamodt Kilde – Shiffrin’s fiancé – who is eyeing Thursday’s super-G as a potential comeback race nearly two years after a horrific crash in Wengen left him with severe injuries to his leg and shoulder. Kilde plans to make a final decision Wednesday night.
