Mikaela Shiffrin, the reigning queen of alpine skiing, is gearing up for an emotional return to super-G competition after a two-year hiatus, expressing a mix of excitement, nerves, and intrigue about stepping back into the starting gate.
In a heartfelt social media post, the American superstar shared her anticipation ahead of Sunday’s World Cup super-G in St. Moritz. “It’s hard to put into words this feeling – the buildup to racing super-G again after two years,” she wrote. “This is a huge milestone for me. I’m thrilled, a bit anxious, and really wondering how it’ll feel to be in the gate, charge down the course, or hit the finish line.”
Shiffrin, who last competed in super-G in December 2023, fondly recalled the discipline’s rush: “In the past, it’s always been an adrenaline high that left me thinking, ‘I just want to do that over and over!'” She’s hopeful that sensation returns, noting strong performances in summer and recent training sessions.
Wearing bib 31, Shiffrin will line up alongside a stacked field of elite athletes, including teammates and close friends, on the demanding Corviglia course. The 30-year-old currently leads the overall World Cup standings by a commanding margin and has dominated technical events this season, making her speed return a major storyline as the circuit builds toward the 2026 Milano Cortina Olympics.
“Here we go!” Shiffrin concluded, capturing the buzz surrounding her comeback in this high-speed event she has long embraced. Fans worldwide are eager to see if the record-breaking champion can rediscover that exhilarating spark. The women’s super-G kicks off Sunday at 10:45 CET.
