American alpine skiing icon Mikaela Shiffrin is gearing up for a high-stakes return to Super-G competition this Sunday in St. Moritz, Switzerland — her first race in the speed discipline since December 2023.
The 30-year-old superstar, who has dominated the 2025/26 FIS Alpine Ski World Cup season so far, will don bib No. 31 on the demanding Swiss course. Shiffrin has steered clear of speed events since a frightening downhill crash in Cortina d’Ampezzo in January 2024, focusing instead on technical disciplines where she’s racked up wins and points.
Currently leading the overall World Cup standings by a massive 156 points over Albania’s Lara Colturi, Shiffrin has swept all three slaloms this season and scored solidly in giant slalom. But she’s eager to test her speed skills ahead of the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games.
“I adore Super-G and don’t want to give it up entirely,” Shiffrin said earlier this season. “St. Moritz is my chance to gauge where I stand — and whether Olympic qualification in the discipline is realistic.”
A proven speed threat with five career Super-G World Cup wins, including the 2019 crystal globe and world title, Shiffrin will share the spotlight with teammate Lindsey Vonn, who starts with bib No. 10 after her recent downhill victory.
The women’s Super-G kicks off at 10:45 CET on December 14. Fans can catch the action live on platforms like Ski and Snowboard Live (USA), CBC Sports (Canada), Eurosport/Discovery+ (Europe), or FIS TV in select markets.
All eyes will be on Shiffrin as she blasts back into the fast lane — could this be the spark for another multi-discipline Olympic charge?
