Switzerland’s Camille Rast delivered a commanding performance to secure her first-ever FIS Alpine Ski World Cup giant slalom win on the demanding Podkoren slope in Kranjska Gora today. The reigning slalom world champion posted a combined time of 2:00.09, holding off a fierce challenge from the field in chilly conditions.
Austria’s Julia Scheib, the current giant slalom discipline leader, finished a close second, just 0.20 seconds behind, while American Paula Moltzan bounced back strongly to claim third place (+0.47), marking her seventh career World Cup podium.
The U.S. team had an impressive day, with three skiers in the top 10: Moltzan in third, overall World Cup leader Mikaela Shiffrin in fifth (+1.05), and Nina O’Brien in eighth (+1.85). Sweden’s Sara Hector rounded out the top four (+0.50).
Rast, starting with bib 1, led after the first run and sealed the victory with a solid second run, dedicating her triumph to the victims of a recent tragedy in her home region. “It’s an emotional win,” Rast said post-race.
The women’s World Cup action continues tomorrow in Kranjska Gora with a slalom event.
