Mikaela Shiffrin, one of the most decorated alpine skiers in history, recently opened up about the harsh reality of ski racing boots, admitting they are far from comfortable—even for elite athletes like herself.
In a recent YouTube Q&A video on her channel, the American star responded candidly to a fan’s question about whether race boots are comfortable. “No, they are not comfortable. They are very uncomfortable,” Shiffrin said. She explained that athletes endure significant foot issues, including bone spurs, bumps, and bruises, due to the rigid design required for performance. Boot technicians from ski companies often grind down parts of the boots to create custom pockets that relieve pressure on these problem areas. “It does work and helps a lot,” she noted, but emphasized that the boots remain extremely hard overall.
Shiffrin, who has amassed over 100 World Cup victories, 12 discipline titles, five overall season titles, and three Olympic medals (two gold and one silver), added that she looks forward to a day when she no longer has to wear them. “But for now, they help me be fast,” she said, highlighting the trade-off between comfort and competitive edge.
The 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina are just around the corner, running from February 6 to 22, and Shiffrin is gearing up to compete as part of Team USA. Her comments come amid preparations for the Games, where she aims to add to her impressive legacy.
Meanwhile, fellow American skier Lindsey Vonn faced a setback just one week before the Olympics. The 41-year-old, who returned to competition in late 2024 after retiring in 2019 with dreams of one last Olympic appearance, crashed during a downhill World Cup event in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, on January 30, 2026. She injured her left knee and was airlifted for evaluation, later withdrawing from the subsequent Super-G race.
Vonn shared an update on Instagram, expressing determination: “This is a very difficult outcome one week before the Olympics… but if there’s one thing I know how to do, it’s a comeback. My Olympic dream is not over.” Shiffrin showed support for her teammate, commenting on Vonn’s post: “If anyone can do this, it’s you.” Other stars, including Coco Gauff and Simone Biles, also offered encouragement in the comments.
Both Shiffrin and Vonn are on the U.S. roster for Milano Cortina, and fans are hoping Vonn can recover in time for what could be her final Olympic Games. The alpine skiing events will be a major highlight as Team USA looks to shine on the world stage.
