Defying the odds once again, American skiing legend Lindsey Vonn declared on Tuesday that she will reach the starting gate for the women’s downhill at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, calling it one of her greatest comebacks yet — even after completely rupturing her left ACL in a dramatic crash just last week.
The 41-year-old three-time Olympic medalist revealed the full extent of her injury during an emotional press conference: a “completely ruptured” ACL, accompanied by bone bruising and meniscal damage, sustained when she crashed into the safety nets during the final World Cup downhill in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, on January 30. Airlifted for evaluation, Vonn faced immediate questions about her participation in what could be her farewell Olympic appearance.
But Vonn, who has battled through devastating knee injuries throughout her storied career — including multiple ACL tears, tibial plateau fractures, and a partial titanium implant in her right knee — refused to let this latest setback end her dream.
“I will do everything in my power to be in that starting gate,” Vonn said firmly. “I will make it to the start gate… As long as there’s a chance, I will try. I will not go home regretting not trying.”
After three intense days of physical therapy, doctor consultations, and on-snow testing with a supportive knee brace, Vonn reported no swelling, stability in her knee, and confidence in her ability to compete. She skied earlier Tuesday and plans to gradually ramp up to full downhill speed in the coming days, evaluating her condition daily ahead of Thursday’s training runs and Sunday’s women’s downhill on the iconic Tofane course in Cortina — where she holds the World Cup record with 12 victories.
“This is not an unknown for me. I’ve done this before,” Vonn reflected, referencing past triumphs like her 2010 Olympic gold in downhill (achieved despite a bruised shin treated with cheese) and her bronze at the 2019 worlds amid severe knee damage. “I feel a lot better now than I did in 2019… This would be the best comeback I’ve done so far. Definitely the most dramatic.”
Experts and peers echo her determination. Italian Winter Sports Federation chief physician Andrea Panzeri noted that elite athletes, including Sofia Goggia (who won silver at the 2022 Olympics weeks after a partial ACL tear and fracture), have successfully competed with torn ACLs. Teammates praise Vonn’s unmatched mental toughness.
Fresh off a remarkable post-retirement resurgence — leading the World Cup downhill standings with multiple podiums this season — Vonn remains one of the biggest stories of these Games. She also intends to contest super-G and the team combined if her knee holds up.
With the Opening Ceremony set for Friday and the downhill just days away, Vonn’s unyielding resolve has captivated fans worldwide. Drawing inspiration from her late childhood coach Erich Sailer, whose words she recalls — “It’s only 90 seconds. What’s 90 seconds in a lifetime? It’s nothing. You can do it.” — the skiing icon is ready to write another legendary chapter.
Lindsey Vonn isn’t just racing for medals — she’s racing for the chance to prove that grit can conquer even the toughest breaks. The slopes await. ⛷️💪
