U.S. Alpine skiing legend Lindsey Vonn offered a heartfelt and candid injury update from her hospital bed on Friday, revealing that she still faces multiple additional surgeries following her devastating crash in the women’s downhill at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics.
The 41-year-old five-time Olympian, who was airlifted from the Tofane course after a violent fall just 13 seconds into her run on February 8, is recovering at Ca’ Foncello Hospital in Treviso. She has already undergone three procedures to address a complex tibia fracture in her left leg.
In an Instagram video, Vonn appeared connected to medical monitors and IV lines, resting her head on a stuffed shark pillow among gifts from supporters. She expressed deep appreciation for the overwhelming support from fans, including flowers, letters, and stuffed animals that have helped her through the ordeal.
“Thank you so much to everyone that has been sending me flowers and letters and sharks,” Vonn said, gesturing to the plush toy. “It’s just been so amazing and really helped me a lot. It’s been quite a hard few days in the hospital here. I’m finally feeling more like myself, but I have a long, long way to go.”
Vonn confirmed a fourth surgery is set for Saturday, expressing hope it will allow her discharge to return home—where she anticipates at least one more operation, pending detailed imaging to clarify the plan. She remains largely immobile but highlighted the strength drawn from family and friend visits, excellent medical care, and global encouragement.
The update also included a positive note for Team USA: “It’s so great to watch and really lifted my spirits. Good job, team, and keep crushing it.”
This message follows her Wednesday announcement that the third surgery was “successful,” with gradual progress reinforcing her optimism despite the setbacks. The crash compounded prior challenges, as Vonn had competed with a recently ruptured ACL in her left knee from a January 30 World Cup incident in Switzerland—yet pushed forward in an inspiring comeback attempt after years away from elite racing.
Vonn’s transparency and determination continue to resonate, highlighting the sport’s risks while showcasing the grit of one of its all-time greats. As she gears up for the next procedures and extended rehab, the skiing world and fans stand firmly behind her, offering continued support for a complete recovery.
