American skiing icon Lindsey Vonn is preparing to return to the United States this evening after undergoing her fourth surgery in Italy to repair a complex tibia fracture. The 41-year-old’s high-stakes Olympic comeback was tragically cut short on February 8 when she suffered a high-speed crash just 13 seconds into the women’s downhill event.
Despite the severity of the injury, which required immediate helicopter evacuation and multiple procedures at Ca’ Foncello Hospital in Treviso, Vonn remains resolute. “Surgery went well today! Thankfully I will be able to finally go back to the US,” she shared via Instagram. U.S. Ski Team officials confirmed that while she is stable enough for travel, Vonn faces an arduous recovery path and will require further surgeries upon her arrival in the States.
