Legendary American alpine skier Lindsey Vonn, 41, has once again captured the world’s attention—and hearts—with her daring return to the slopes, only for a devastating injury to cut her story short at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina.

Vonn, one of the most decorated skiers in history with three Olympic medals across five Games appearances, first retired in 2019 after years of battling knee injuries, including a partial knee replacement. Defying the odds, she unretired in 2024, competed strongly in the 2025 World Championships and World Cup events, and earned her spot on the U.S. team for what many believed would be her triumphant final Olympics.

The road to glory was anything but smooth. Just nine days before her downhill race, Vonn suffered a full ACL rupture in her left knee during a pre-Olympic training run. Remarkably, she chose to compete anyway, showcasing the grit that has defined her career. Tragically, disaster struck early: 13 seconds into her Olympic downhill run on February 8, she hooked a gate, crashed violently, and sustained a complex tibia fracture in her left leg. Airlifted off the mountain, she underwent four surgeries in Italy before returning to the United States, where she faces additional procedures.

In recent social media updates, Vonn described being “immobile” and unable to stand for over a week, calling her injury “a lot more severe than just a broken leg” while expressing gratitude for the care she received. She’s now home, slowly recovering and vowing to push forward, but the physical toll is undeniable.

Her father, Alan Kildow, has publicly urged retirement, stating, “She’s 41 years old and this is the end of her career.” Vonn herself has not announced a formal retirement, leaving fans wondering: After this brutal setback, will the skiing icon hang up her skis for good—or find one more comeback in her?

Vonn’s legacy as a trailblazer, record-breaker, and symbol of resilience remains unbreakable. Whatever comes next, her story continues to inspire millions. Thoughts and prayers are with her during this challenging recovery—what do you think her future holds? 💔⛷️ #LindseyVonn #Olympics2026 #SkiingLegend
