In an emotional social media update that’s tugging at heartstrings worldwide, skiing icon Lindsey Vonn opened up about the profound personal pain compounding her grueling physical recovery following her devastating crash at the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics.
The 41-year-old five-time Olympian and 2010 downhill gold medalist finally returned home on Sunday after enduring five major surgeries on her severely fractured left leg. The injuries—including a complex tibia fracture, breaks to the fibular head and tibial plateau, plus compartment syndrome—nearly cost her the limb, requiring emergency procedures to relieve pressure and extensive reconstruction with plates and screws.
But the toughest moment came when she wheeled through her front door: no joyful greeting from her cherished dog, Leo.
“Home sweet home. Feels good to sleep in my own bed… but wheeling through the front door without Leo greeting me like always was a very hard reality,” Vonn shared on Instagram. “A reality I had to face. Along with many other hard realities that lay in front of me as I move forward…”
Leo, her loyal companion since 2013, passed away on February 9, 2026—the day after her Olympic crash—while she lay immobile in the hospital. Vonn previously honored him in a touching tribute, calling him her “first love” and comforter through past injuries, now reunited in heaven with her other dogs Lucy and Bear.
Despite the double blow of career-threatening injuries and this deep personal loss, Vonn remains resolute. “I’m focused now on therapy and getting healthy. It’s going to be a hard and painful journey but I am putting all of my energy into it, like I always do,” she wrote. She’s shifting from wheelchair to crutches soon, with a year-long bone healing process ahead before addressing her pre-existing ACL issues.
Vonn has been candid throughout her ordeal—sharing raw photos of scarred, atrophied legs (“All my muscles are gone”), detailing mental health battles, and emphasizing no regrets about her daring Olympic comeback after six years retired.
The sports world continues to rally around the resilient legend, sending waves of support as she navigates this toughest chapter yet. Her strength in vulnerability reminds us all that even champions face unimaginable trials—and keep fighting.
Sending all the love and healing vibes to Lindsey. You’ve got this, queen! 💪❤️🐾⛷️
