Lindsey Vonn’s Emotional Farewell to Skiing: “Whether I’ll Ever Be Able to Do It Again Is Yet to Be Seen” After Devastating Olympic Leg Fracture

In a heartfelt and tearful social media post, skiing legend Lindsey Vonn has cast serious doubt on her future in the sport following a catastrophic injury at the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Olympics.

The 41-year-old American icon, who made an inspiring comeback after retiring in 2019, entered her fifth Olympics with high expectations, aiming to add to her three career Olympic medals and secure another FIS Alpine Ski World Cup downhill title. Leading the women’s downhill standings with 400 points after seven races—and holding the red leader bib since the season’s start—Vonn was poised for glory.

Tragically, her dream shattered just seconds into the downhill event when she crashed, suffering a complex fracture in her left leg. The injury, which required multiple surgeries (including procedures that doctors said prevented amputation), forced her out of the rest of the Games and ended her season prematurely. She also revealed she was competing with a previously torn ACL in the same leg, adding to the physical toll.

In her recent emotional update, Vonn reflected on losing her No. 1 ranking as the final races approached without her participation. “I’ve had the red leader bib from the first race of the season until now, but in all likelihood tomorrow will be my last day as #1,” she wrote. Admitting she broke down in tears over the prospect, she questioned why a “crystal trophy” meant so much—before answering her own question: “My tears just mean I care. I always have. That’s why I work so hard. Skiing is my passion.”

Vonn then addressed the bigger uncertainty head-on: “Whether I’ll ever be able to do it again is yet to be seen. But at least I have the memories, with or without a title, I feel privileged to have had this adventure. Wherever this path leads I will find my way. I always do. Skiing is what I love to do but it’s not who I am. There are so many reasons to be happy. So much to be thankful for.”

Currently in rehab, Vonn has shared progress videos showing her working toward standing again, though full recovery remains uncertain given the severity of the injury and her age. Her comeback had already defied odds after a six-year hiatus and a partial knee replacement, but this setback has left her future in competitive skiing hanging in the balance.

Fans and fellow athletes have flooded social media with support for the trailblazing champion, who has long been one of alpine skiing’s most dominant and resilient figures. As Vonn navigates recovery, the sports world watches to see if this chapter marks the end of an extraordinary career—or another remarkable return.
