Skiing superstar Lindsey Vonn just delivered a gut-punch update that’s breaking hearts everywhere.
The 41-year-old GOAT, who defied all odds by coming out of retirement and dominating the World Cup downhill circuit this season, has lost her iron grip on the #1 spot.
In a raw, inspiring Instagram post, Vonn wrote: “Well… I’ve had the red leader bib from the first race of the season until now, but in all likelihood tomorrow will be my last day as #1.”
She continued: “At the beginning of the season no one would have ever believed I would be even close to this position… But winning the title was my goal… and I came painfully close to achieving it. I was on the podium of every single downhill race, including 2 wins. I clawed my way back to #1 in the world after being retired for 6 years with a partial knee replacement… Even though in a few days no one will remember that I almost won the season title, I will remember.”
The heartbreaking reason? A devastating chain of injuries at the 2026 Milano Cortina Olympics. Vonn tore her ACL just a week before the Games started, then crashed violently 13 seconds into her downhill run—suffering a brutal leg fracture so severe it triggered compartment syndrome and nearly led to amputation. She endured multiple emergency surgeries in Italy before heading home to continue her grueling recovery.
That sidelined her for the season’s crucial final races, allowing Italy’s Laura Pirovano to surge ahead with razor-close victories and claim the lead.
Despite the pain, Vonn’s message is pure resilience: “I didn’t want to win the title to prove anything to anyone. I did it because I knew I could. I just wish I had a chance to fight until the end… Wherever this path leads I will find my way. Skiing is what I love to do but it’s not who I am. There are so many reasons to be happy. So much to be thankful for 🙏🏻 Thank you all for coming on this journey with me ❤️.”
Vonn hasn’t ruled out a return, but at 41 (and facing a long road ahead), this could mark the end of an legendary era. What a warrior—she reminded us all what true grit looks like.
