Olympic skiing legend Lindsey Vonn is proving once again why she’s one of the toughest athletes on the planet. Just six weeks after a horrific crash at the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympics left her with a devastating leg injury, the 41-year-old posted an inspiring video of herself completing her first set of unassisted pull-ups in the gym.
The accident happened during the women’s downhill event on February 8, when Vonn clipped a gate just 13 seconds into her run, sending her flying off course. She suffered a complex tibia fracture—along with breaks to her fibula head and tibial plateau—plus complications from compartment syndrome that built dangerous pressure in her leg muscles, nerves, and blood vessels.
Doctors performed emergency procedures, including a fasciotomy (a surgery that essentially “filleted” her leg open to relieve pressure), and at one point, amputation was a real consideration to save her life. Vonn credited her surgeon, Dr. Tom Hackett, with saving her leg from that fate after multiple surgeries in Italy and the U.S.
Released from the hospital in late February, Vonn has been documenting her grueling rehab every step of the way. In her March 21 Instagram reel, she powers through several clean pull-ups on the bar, her injured leg braced and crutches waiting nearby. After finishing, she flashes a triumphant smile, fist-bumps her trainer, and carefully lowers herself back down.
“First set of pull ups post surgery… slowly getting there! #progress #onestepatatime,” she captioned the post, which quickly racked up thousands of likes and comments from fans and celebrities alike, including Chelsea Handler calling it “INSPIRING, INCREDIBLE, BEAST MODE.”
Vonn’s recovery is far from over—she’s still on crutches and faces a long road ahead—but this upper-body milestone shows her unbreakable spirit and determination. From nearly losing her leg to banging out pull-ups in record time, the skiing icon is reminding everyone: nothing keeps Lindsey Vonn down for long.
What an absolute warrior. Who’s rooting for her full comeback? 🔥
