Mikaela Shiffrin is heading home with some shiny new baggage — and she’s not even trying to hide how thrilled she is.
Just days ago, the American skiing superstar clinched her record-tying sixth overall FIS Crystal Globe, matching the legendary Annemarie Moser-Pröll’s all-time mark for women’s alpine skiing. Shiffrin sealed the deal in dramatic fashion during the final giant slalom of the 2025-26 World Cup season in Hafjell (near Lillehammer), Norway, on March 25, 2026.
Needing only a top-15 finish to mathematically lock up the title, Shiffrin delivered a solid second run to finish 11th — more than enough to hold off a late charge from young German challenger Emma Aicher. The moment the math clicked, emotions overflowed: Shiffrin broke down in tears as her team confirmed she had done it.
“Flying home with a little extra hardware,” she posted with a cheeky caption alongside photos of the massive crystal globe, adding “(let’s hope I can transport these in one piece)” and a laughing emoji. The post quickly went viral among ski fans worldwide.
This sixth overall title caps an extraordinary season for the most decorated alpine skier in history. Shiffrin also claimed her record-extending 9th slalom Crystal Globe and notched her 110th career World Cup victory earlier in the campaign. She now sits on an incredible 18 career Crystal Globes across all disciplines.
At 31 years old, Shiffrin has reclaimed the overall crown after missing it in recent seasons due to injuries. This one feels especially sweet — she raced fewer speed events than ever before (no downhills at all) yet still dominated through consistency and technical brilliance, particularly in slalom and giant slalom.
Shiffrin held off Aicher by just 87 points in the final standings, making it one of the tightest overall battles of her career. “It’s just crazy,” she said afterward, reflecting on the rollercoaster of emotions when her team first told her the title was secure.
With this milestone, Shiffrin cements her status as one of the greatest athletes in winter sports history. The question now buzzing in the ski world: Can she go for a seventh overall globe and claim the record outright?
From tearful celebration in Norway to proudly hauling that iconic crystal prize onto the plane — Mikaela Shiffrin continues to rewrite the record books, one globe at a time.
