Lindsey Vonn Refuses to Close the Door: “I Might Ski Again” After Brutal Olympic Crash That Nearly Cost Her Leg

Olympic skiing legend Lindsey Vonn is making a fierce comeback from one of the scariest injuries of her career — and she’s not ready to say goodbye to the slopes just yet.

The 41-year-old crashed hard just 13 seconds into her downhill run at the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympics in Cortina, Italy. The high-speed wipeout left her with a complex tibia fracture, plus fractures to her tibial plateau and fibular head in her left leg, and a broken right ankle. Things got even more dangerous when she developed compartment syndrome — a serious condition where swelling and pressure inside the muscle compartment threatened to kill tissue and nearly forced doctors to amputate her leg.

Emergency surgeries in Italy and back home in the U.S. (including a reported fourth or fifth procedure) saved her leg, but the recovery has been intense.3278f0

In a candid new Vanity Fair interview, Vonn opened up about the moment that could have ended everything.

“I don’t like to close the door on anything, because you just never know what’s going to happen,” she said. “It’s hard to tell with this injury.”

She added that she hates the idea of fans remembering her for that terrifying crash instead of her dominant season: “I really feel like that was a horrible last run to end my career on. I only made it 13 seconds. But they were a really good 13 seconds… What I did before the Olympics has never been done before. I was number one in the standings. No one remembers that I was winning.”

Vonn has poured everything into rehab since returning home. On March 13, she posted a hopeful update: “Guys….I’m biking!! Starting with 5 minutes…making progress one day at a time 💪🏻”

Just a week later, she celebrated another milestone — her first set of pull-ups after surgery — writing, “Slowly getting there!”

Right after the crash on Feb. 8, she shared a raw Instagram message with fans: “Yesterday my Olympic dream did not finish the way I dreamt it would… I dared to dream and had worked so hard to achieve it… I have no regrets. Standing in the starting gate yesterday was an incredible feeling that I will never forget.”

At 41, Vonn has battled multiple major injuries throughout her legendary career, including a torn ACL just weeks before the Olympics. Yet her determination remains unbroken. Fans are watching closely to see if this unstoppable champion will strap on her skis again — and with the fire she’s showing in recovery, few would bet against her.

The skiing world is rooting for the comeback queen. As Vonn proves every day: the fight isn’t over until she says it is.
