Doctors Feared Amputation — But Lindsey Vonn Is Already Doing Pull-Ups and Eyeing a Comeback

Just weeks after a terrifying crash at the 2026 Winter Olympics that left doctors fighting to save her left leg from amputation, alpine skiing icon Lindsey Vonn is showing the world her unbreakable spirit.

The 41-year-old Olympic champion suffered a complex fracture of her left tibia and fibula, along with severe compartment syndrome, after hooking a gate just 13 seconds into her downhill run in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy. The injury required multiple surgeries, including an emergency fasciotomy that “filleted” her leg open to relieve life-threatening pressure.

Many feared the worst. Yet Vonn has already hit a remarkable milestone: performing six unassisted pull-ups in the gym while still on crutches.

In an inspiring Instagram video posted in late March, Vonn is seen powering through the pull-ups before dropping onto a step stool, fist-bumping her trainer, and flashing a triumphant smile. “First set of pull ups post surgery,” she captioned the clip. “Slowly getting there!”

Vonn has been transparent about the grueling recovery, which also includes time on a stationary bike (starting with just five minutes) and careful physical therapy. She returned home to Park City, Utah, in early March after weeks in hospitals in Italy and Colorado.

In her first major interview since the crash, featured on the cover of Vanity Fair, Vonn reflected on the ordeal while keeping the door open for the future. “I don’t like to close the door on anything, because you just never know what’s going to happen,” she said.

Fans and fellow athletes have flooded her with support, including messages from stars like Tom Brady and even royalty. Vonn has shared some of those heartfelt notes, calling them a source of strength during dark days.

From retiring in 2019, battling chronic injuries, returning to win World Cup races as the oldest skier to do so, tearing her ACL just days before the Olympics, and still competing — Vonn’s career has been defined by resilience. Her latest updates prove that spirit is still very much alive.

As she put it in one powerful post: progress is happening “one step at a time.”
