Former Pittsburgh Steelers player quits new team after being benched

The New England Patriots have made a stunning move, placing former Pittsburgh Steelers tackle Chukwuma Okorafor on the reserve/left team list after just one game. Okorafor, who signed a one-year deal with the Patriots this offseason, was benched in favor of Vederian Lowe following a disappointing performance. The writing was on the wall after Okorafor struggled with penalties, including four illegal formation infractions in the preseason and another in the season opener.

Okorafor’s brief stint with the Patriots has come to an abrupt end, with reports suggesting he has quit the team. The 25-year-old tackle was released by the Steelers two years into a three-year contract and was looking to revive his career in New England. However, his disciplinary issues and struggles on the field proved too much to overcome.

The decision by first-year head coach Jerod Mayo sends a clear message: performance and discipline will be prioritized in Foxborough. Okorafor’s departure raises questions about the Patriots’ depth on the offensive line, but Mayo’s swift action demonstrates his commitment to building a cohesive unit. As the Patriots move forward, attention turns to Lowe and the remaining linemen to step up and fill the void left by Okorafor’s sudden exit.
