Nick Saban’s retirement in January marked the end of an era, but his legacy lives on through his final recruits. Two five-star transfers, defensive end LT Overton and cornerback Domani Jackson, committed to Alabama last December, unaware of Saban’s impending departure. Despite the coaching change, they remained loyal and now play crucial roles in the Tide’s defense.
Overton, once ranked No. 1 in the 2023 class, had underwhelming seasons at Texas A&M. However, under new defensive coordinator Kane Wommack, he’s emerged as a rotational player at defensive end. Overton’s impressive performance against Wisconsin earned him Defensive Player of the Week honors, with six tackles, a sack, pass break-up, and forced fumble.
Wommack praised Overton’s dominance, citing his physicality, high motor, and efficiency in Alabama’s scheme. Overton’s growth and production have been significant additions to the Tide’s defense.
Jackson, ranked No. 4 nationally in the 2022 class, transferred from USC and has anchored the cornerback position. Despite minimal stats, Jackson’s sticky coverage and ability to discourage quarterbacks’ first looks have been invaluable. Cornerbacks coach Maurice Linguist commended Jackson’s silent work, leveraging his length, speed, and leverage to cover receivers.
Jackson and Overton represent Saban’s parting gifts to Alabama, joining 15 other five-star players on the 2024 roster. This talent-rich squad has contributed to Alabama’s No. 1 ranking in 247 Sports’ team talent composite.
The true last player Saban recruited might be running back Anthony Rogers, who pledged to the Tide last June. However, Jackson and Overton, along with transfer Naquil Betrand, were Saban’s final portal additions, ensuring his influence remains felt in Tuscaloosa.
