Kyrie Irving, the eight-time NBA All-Star, is considering a dramatic switch to play for the Australian Boomers at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Born in Melbourne before moving to the USA at just two years old, Irving has already expressed his desire to represent Australia, saying “I wanted to play for Australia” and considering himself an international player despite playing for Team USA.
Irving’s interest in playing for Australia comes after being snubbed for the 2024 Paris games, where Team USA is competing against top teams ³. With his impressive track record, including three gold medals at the junior level, Olympics, and FIBA World Cup, Irving’s addition would be a significant boost to the Boomers.
Although he’ll be 36 by the time the Los Angeles Games begin, Irving’s talent and experience would still be invaluable to the Australian team. However, it’s worth noting that Irving would need both his current nation and FIBA to grant him a release to play for Australia
