It’s time for the Browns to bench Deshaun Watson: Here’s why

The Cleveland Browns’ dismal 1-5 start to the season has sparked calls for quarterback Deshaun Watson to be benched. Despite his lucrative contract, Watson’s underwhelming performance has jeopardized the team’s credibility and playoff hopes.

    WATSON’S STRUGGLES CONTINUE

Sunday’s loss to the Philadelphia Eagles saw Watson fail to impress, with 144 yards from 28 pass dropbacks and five sacks. The Browns’ offense has been anemic, ranking 31st in expected points added (EPA) per play and 31st in points per drive.

    COACHING STAFF UNDER PRESSURE

Browns coach Kevin Stefanski has reiterated his support for Watson, but it remains to be seen whether this decision is genuinely his or influenced by ownership. Regardless, the on-field product demands change.

    HISTORICALLY BAD LEVEL OF PLAY

Watson’s stats are alarming, with the Browns’ offense averaging a league-worst 19.5 yards per possession. Their 51% punt rate on possessions is the highest in the league, and they have managed only nine red zone trips this season.

    COMPARISONS TO PAST STRUGGLING TEAMS

The Browns’ poor start is reminiscent of the 2008 Rams and 2009 Raiders, who started JaMarcus Russell. Four of the six teams with similar struggles since 2000 had quarterbacks injured or benched.

    WATSON’S RESPONSIBILITY

While the entire team shares blame, Watson’s play has been particularly concerning. His inability to lead the offense and create scoring opportunities has raised questions about his long-term viability.

    JAMEIS WINSTON: A POTENTIAL REPLACEMENT

Benching Watson could lead to Jameis Winston taking the reins. While Winston may not be a significant upgrade, the offense might at least show signs of life and concern opposing defenses.

FANS AND OWNERSHIP GROUP ON EDGE

The Browns’ faithful and ownership group are growing restless, with $93 million in guaranteed money remaining on Watson’s contract. Continuing to start Watson risks alienating fans and undermining the coaching staff’s credibility.

CHANGE IS NEEDED TO REVITALIZE SEASON

For the Browns to salvage their season, a change at quarterback is necessary. Will Stefanski and the front office acknowledge the need for a shake-up, or will Watson continue to start despite his struggles? The clock is ticking.
