The New York Jets got their season back on track on Thursday in their 21-13 victory against the Houston Texans. Although the Jets were able to get the win at a much-needed time, their offense still showed plenty of flaws in their scoreless first half. Their biggest missed opportunity came in the second quarter when rookie receiver Malachi Corley fumbled the ball while walking into the end zone for an easy touchdown. Since the ball rolled out-of-bounds in the end zone, it became a touchback and the Jets left without points. Following the game, interim coach Jeff Ulbrich reacted to the play with an upset but hopeful response. “Definitely frustrated to be honest, and angry at the same time,” said Ulbrich. “But what an amazing opportunity for this kid to grow and learn from. I promise you, 10 years from now when he’s still playing in this league, that will never happen again.”
Ulbrich continued, reciting what he said to Corley after the play. “First of all, you can’t do that. Second of all, you owe us one,” said Ulbrich. Corley, who the Jets selected in the third-round of the 2024 draft out of Western Kentucky, has not seen much time on the field after many had high expectations for him entering his rookie year. Prior to Thursday night, Corley had played just eight snaps and had one career touch. His second touch came last night, and although it ended with a bad turnover, Corley did still take a rush 18 yards to the end zone, showing some promise.
