From afar, Kai Jones seemed predestined for skiing stardom. He was born into the Jones family—maybe the closest thing freeskiing and snowboarding has to royalty—and, at the tender age of 12, was already a professional skier.
Two years later, when he was 14, Kai began earning a series of consecutive Skier of the Year nominations. With his dad and Teton Gravity Research co-founder Todd Jones there to capture all the slopeside action, the ski community was privy to Kai’s high-flying ascendancy, watching season after season as he pushed his talents further.
But in 2023, Kai’s career ground to a halt. While skiing in the Wyoming backcountry he crashed, severely injuring himself. The grueling months that followed saw surgery and rehab. Kai had to relearn how to walk.
Most professional skiers have to pay the injury toll at some point or another. The mountains play rough with everyone, and recovery is a personal battle no matter who you have in your corner. Falling into Place, a new documentary from Teton Gravity Research explains how Kai managed to successfully navigate the setback that could’ve snuffed out his professional skiing career. Check out the trailer below.
“This journey has been the biggest test of my life,” said Kai. “Getting back on my feet after the accident took everything I had, physically and mentally. This film captures all of it—the highs, the lows, and the doubts. I hope it shows people that no matter how tough things get, there’s always a way forward.”
Directing the film are Clayton Vila and Todd Jones. Vila, of Stept fame, has since branched outside of snowsports, taking on filmmaking work that doesn’t involve skis or snow. Still, he seems to be making time for the sport that played a role in launching his career, as evidenced by Falling into Place and last season’s Shadows Fade, a Quinn Wolferman part that Vila edited.
Kai’s new film is a retrospective. Since 2023, he’s bounced back, appearing in 2024’s Teton Gravity Research film Beyond the Fantasy—and proving that he has the grit to surmount the inevitable obstacles that come with his chosen vocation. What we didn’t know is how Kai made it through the gauntlet in one piece.
That changes on December 3rd when Falling into Place releases digitally, with streaming available on Teton Gravity Research TV, Red Bull TV, Apple TV, Amazon, YouTube Movies, and Google TV.

Whoopi Goldberg launches all-women’s sports TV network
Multi-award-winning actress and co-host of ABC’s “The View” Whoopi Goldberg announced Wednesday she is launching an all-women’s sports television network called AWSN (All Women’s Sports Network). Goldberg made the announcement on NBC’s “The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon.” “It’ll be the home for live women’s sports from around the world,” Goldberg told Fallon. “Everything from soccer, basketball, tennis, cricket, curling, you name it — if a woman is playing it, we’re showing it.” The network is partnering with CommonSpirit Health, a network of medical providers focused on women’s well-being, and Goldberg added that the channel is growing rapidly – already launching in Asia, the Middle East and India. “I wanted to do this because ever since I was a little kid, I always wanted to play sports,” she continued. “and [people] would say ‘hi, little girl’ and it always pissed me off.” AWSN currently does not have any U.S. providers listed on its website, but Goldberg teased a “big announcement” coming the week of Nov. 11. The network promises to feature “some of the biggest leagues in the world such as UEFA, FIBA, WTA, and WNBL” and aims “to fill global gaps in broadcasting popular women’s sports.” “Athletics when they’re done brilliantly, it doesn’t matter who’s doing it,” Goldberg said. “We don’t really have that relationship with women’s sports so I said I would like to do this and somebody after 16 years said ‘My, what a good idea.'” AWSN is not the first of its kind, however. Women’s Sports Network (WSN) launched in the U.S. in 2022 and is currently available on nine separate providers, per its website.

Mets writer makes huge Juan Soto, Pete Alonso prediction
It was said as far back as this past spring that the New York Yankees could target first baseman Pete Alonso in free agency if New York Mets owner Steve Cohen convinced All-Star outfielder Juan Soto to make a big-money move to Queens. For an article published on Thursday, SNY manager of editorial production Danny Abriano predicted Cohen won’t make an either/or choice this offseason. “A perfect storm is brewing for the Mets,” Abriano explained, “who have tons of money coming off the books ahead of the 2025 season, are in strong shape payroll-wise for the next half-decade and seem primed to make a Soto pursuit the centerpiece of what is expected to be a very aggressive offseason. …It’s hard to see the sweepstakes coming down to anything but a Mets-versus-Yankees battle. And the Mets will come out on top.” Numerous insiders have pointed out that Cohen has the resources to outbid Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner for Soto and then sign the lineup/pitching help the Mets need coming off their surprising run to the 2024 National League Championship Series. Meanwhile, Jon Heyman of the New York Post recently linked the previously mentioned Alonso with eight non-New York clubs. Per the TSN website, Heyman also said on Wednesday that the Mets signing both Soto and Alonso “is not out of the question.” Abriano envisions a scenario where Cohen brings Alonso, who has thus far played only for the Mets since he made his MLB debut in 2019, home on a new deal. “This is business for the Mets and Alonso,” Abriano explained, “but there’s also some emotion tied in. And unless Alonso’s market spirals out of control, the ‘Polar Bear’ returning to the Mets — perhaps on a deal worth around $125M for five years — makes the most sense.” Alonso is one of the most popular Mets players among die-hard fans in recent memory, and the Baseball Almanac website shows he’s just 26 home runs away from tying the franchise record for career homers. While some think Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns could try to convince Cohen to better “spread out his budget,” the owner realistically could have Stearns build around those superstars via value signings similar to those made by the executive last offseason.

New York Mets’ four-step plan to a perfect offseason
The MLB offseason is officially underway, with no shortage of high-profile names set to be available on the free-agent and trade markets. The New York Mets figure to be one of the more intriguing teams to monitor. Here’s a four-step plan for them to ace the offseason: Offseason snapshot: After falling 11 games under .500 in late May, New York mounted a miraculous turnaround that culminated in an appearance in the National League Championship Series. With more than $180 million coming off the books, billionaire owner Steve Cohen has the resources and motivation to take massive swings in his quest to win the World Series. Key free agents: 1B Pete Alonso, LHPs Sean Manaea, Jose Quintana and Brooks Raley, RHPs Luis Severino and Ryne Stanek, infielder Jose Iglesias and outfielder Jesse Winker Team needs: Pitching, outfield and first base Step 1: Sign outfielder Juan Soto For New York to take that next step as a franchise and be on the short list of World Series contenders, its top priority must be Soto. The 26-year-old produced a slash line of .288/.419/.569 with 41 home runs and 109 RBI for the American League champion Yankees this past season, his first with the team. According to Mike Puma of the New York Post, the Mets were among the first of nearly a dozen teams to reach out to Soto once he became a free agent. Additionally, Puma reported Thursday that Cohen will meet with the generational talent and his agent, Scott Boras, in Southern California next week. Soto, a World Series champion and four-time All-Star, is eyeing the richest contract in MLB history, a positive development for the Mets. It’s possible Soto could take a less lucrative contract to remain with the Yankees if he enjoyed his time in the Bronx. However, if his focus is all about money, no team is equipped to win a bidding war against the Mets. Should the Mets strike out on Soto and he signs with anyone other than the Yankees, it’d be a failure of an offseason for Cohen and Co. Step 2: Re-sign Alonso, Manaea and Severino The Mets can still work out deals with this trio while the Soto sweepstakes drag on, but for simplicity’s sake, we’ll treat them as their second objective. New York has already extended the $21.05 million qualifying offer to each player, though Severino is realistically the only one with a chance to accept it. Alonso’s negotiations should be fascinating, as he’ll likely command a contract in the ballpark of $200 million in total value. The “Polar Bear” struggled during the regular season, hitting .240 with 34 homers and 88 RBI and posting a career-worst .788 OPS. Even so, his resume and heroics in the postseason, particularly his go-ahead ninth-inning home run in Game 3 of the wild-card series, justify re-signing the longtime Met. Meanwhile, New York desperately needs to keep Manaea in Queens after the journeyman emerged as an unlikely ace during his first season with the team. Manaea’s success stemmed from lowering his arm slot on July 30, and after making the change, he posted a 3.09 ERA with 83 strikeouts through the end of the season. Severino (3.91 ERA in 2024) isn’t as integral to the rotation, but if he doesn’t accept his qualifying offer, he’s worth signing to a short-term deal. If Severino signs elsewhere, Quintana wouldn’t be a bad consolation prize. Step 3: Revamp the bullpen through free agency and the trade market New York’s weakest link is its bullpen, which ranked 17th in ERA during the regular season (4.03) and posted a 5.56 mark during the postseason. Fortunately for the Mets, president of baseball operations David Stearns proved during his time with the Milwaukee Brewers that he’s capable of building a dominant bullpen without spending much. Stearns has been busy on this front since season’s end, signing under-the-radar deals with a few arms, including Dylan Covey, and declining RHP Phil Maton’s club option. The Mets should re-sign Raley, a left-hander who didn’t allow a run in seven innings in 2024 before suffering a season-ending elbow injury. Retaining Stanek would also be wise after the midseason acquisition posted a 3.38 ERA in October. Still, Stearns will surely continue loading up on affordable arms. A few who could make sense to target are free agents (left-hander Tim Hill and right-handers Blake Treinen and Tommy Kahnle) and a potential trade candidate (San Francisco’s Camilo Doval). If the Mets are willing to pay a decent price to strengthen their bullpen, they should pursue a trade for Stearns’ former closer, Devin Williams, a standout with the Brewers. The Athletic’s Will Sammon and Patrick Mooney recently reported there’s an increasing “perception” that Milwaukee will trade Williams this offseason. Pairing Williams and his 1.83 career ERA with Mets closer Edwin Diaz would create one of the more formidable bullpen duos in the majors. Step 4: Acquire another starting pitcher, perhaps one of the more expensive arms if the price is right Even if the Mets re-sign Manaea and Severino (or Quintana), they’ll still need another starting pitcher. New York could get creative to find a solution. Japanese ace Roki Sasaki would likely be the most sought-after pitcher available if he gets posted this offseason. He was scouted by the Mets, but the Dodgers are “heavily favored to land Sasaki,” per ESPN insider Kiley McDaniel, so he’s probably a long shot for New York. Nevertheless, there are still several front-line starters hitting the open market, most notably right-hander Corbin Burnes and lefty Blake Snell. Burnes (2.92 ERA and 181 strikeouts last season) would cost at least one draft pick to sign since he received a qualifying offer from Baltimore, though he’d be a worthwhile addition. Snell, meanwhile, is arguably a more appealing option after going 5-0 with a 1.23 ERA and 114 strikeouts over his final 14 starts in 2024 for San Francisco. Acquiring Burnes or Snell, along with Soto and Alonso, is realistic for the Mets. But if the Mets target a cheaper starting pitcher, viable candidates are available. Right-hander Walker Buehler and left-hander Yusei Kikuchi stand out as proven veterans who could make a similar type of surprising impact as Manaea and Severino made last season.

Key Lions Jared Goff protector ruled out for Week 10
The Detroit Lions are getting some bad news. Offensive lineman Taylor Decker is out for the team’s next game against Houston, per ESPN. Decker is dealing with an injured shoulder that left him slowed down in recent days. “I don’t see him practicing today,” Lions head coach Dan Campbell said in his Friday morning press conference, per USA Today. “It’s about how he heals up. I don’t feel like this is something major, but we need to really see how he feels over the next 48 hours.” Decker is a key cog on the offensive line unit for the Lions. Detroit is 7-1 on the season, and in first place in the NFC North. The Lions are positioning themselves for another run at the NFC Championship. Decker plays left tackle for the Detroit offense. Due to his injury, the team may have to use right tackle Penei Sewell to replace him. Lions are having another outstanding season Detroit is seeing success it hasn’t had in the last 30 years. The franchise has a chance to make its second consecutive NFC Championship game, much to the delight of the team’s fans. Lions quarterback Jared Goff is a big reason for the team’s excellence. Detroit’s quarterback has 1,840 passing yards and 14 touchdowns this season. He has thrown just four interceptions. That continues a trend of success he saw in 2023, when he tossed for more than 4,000 passing yards and 30 touchdowns. Lions fans certainly hope Decker is back sooner rather than later. The starting tackle has played with the team since 2016; he was Detroit’s first round NFL Draft pick that year. He played his college football at Ohio State, where he won the CFP National Championship in 2014. Decker is clearly part of the reason why Goff is able to put up big numbers. The Lions and Texans play Sunday at 8:20 Eastern. Houston enters the game with a 6-3 record.
