Mikaela Shiffrin won’t team up with Lindsey Vonn in skiing dream team at Alpine worlds

In a move that will undoubtedly disappoint fans and pundits alike, Mikaela Shiffrin has announced that she will not be partnering with Lindsey Vonn in the team combined event at the Alpine skiing world championships in Saalbach-Hinterglemm, Austria. Instead, Shiffrin has opted to focus on her solo events, citing the need for more training and recovery time as she regains her form following a devastating injury.

Shiffrin’s decision comes as a surprise to many, particularly given the excitement and anticipation surrounding a potential dream team partnership with Vonn. The legendary American skier, who returned to the circuit this season at the age of 40 after nearly six years of retirement, had been vocal in her desire to team up with Shiffrin in the team combined event.

The event, which involves one squad member racing downhill and another racing slalom, with the times of the two athletes added together to determine the results, had promised to be a thrilling spectacle, with Shiffrin and Vonn forming a formidable partnership. However, Shiffrin’s decision to prioritize her solo events has put an end to those hopes.

In a statement released on her social media accounts, Shiffrin explained that she is still in the process of regaining her form and fitness following a deep puncture wound sustained in a crash in Killington, Vermont, nearly two months ago. Despite returning to competition last week and placing 10th in a slalom event in Courchevel, France, Shiffrin acknowledged that she is still facing significant challenges in her recovery.

“I’m continuing to take it one step at a time as I work to get back to 100%,” Shiffrin said. “Each day so far has come with a new set of challenges. With that said, I need to keep my energy focused on preparing for the giant slalom and slalom races during world championships, and will not be able to participate in the team combined.”

Shiffrin’s decision is a testament to her dedication and commitment to her craft. By prioritizing her solo events, she is ensuring that she is best positioned to deliver her best performances and compete for medals in the events that matter most to her. While the prospect of a dream team partnership with Vonn may have been an exciting one, Shiffrin’s focus on her individual goals is a reminder that, at the end of the day, she is a solo athlete with her own unique aspirations and ambitions.
