Florida Gators Face Backlash for Scheduling Underwhelming Season Opener Against Long Island Sharks

The Florida Gators are under fire for their 2025 schedule, and it’s not because of their challenging SEC matchups. Instead, fans and analysts are criticizing the team’s decision to schedule a season-opening game against the Long Island Sharks, an FCS program that is largely unknown to casual fans.

The backlash against this matchup is widespread, with many considering it a “total dud” and an unworthy opponent for a program of Florida’s caliber. Longtime SEC analyst Paul Finebaum was particularly scathing in his criticism, labeling the game “completely unwatchable” and questioning the reasoning behind scheduling such a mismatch.

Finebaum’s sentiments are echoed by numerous fans, who are expressing their frustration and disappointment with the Gators’ scheduling decision. Many are calling for more competitive matchups, especially in light of the expanded College Football Playoff. The inclusion of an FCS team like Long Island in the schedule is seen as unnecessary and unappealing.

While it’s true that many big-name programs engage in this practice, scheduling FCS teams to guarantee a win while providing smaller schools with a financial boost, this approach is increasingly being viewed as outdated. Fans are craving more meaningful and competitive matchups, and the Gators’ decision to schedule Long Island is seen as a missed opportunity.

Furthermore, this scheduling decision raises questions about the Gators’ reputation and their aspirations to become a contender again. After struggling in recent seasons, head coach Billy Napier is working to get the program back on track. However, scheduling an FCS opponent like Long Island in the season opener does little to enhance the team’s credibility or generate excitement among fans.

In fact, many argue that if the Gators were to schedule an in-state FCS school, it would be a more acceptable and appealing choice. This approach would allow the team to support local football while providing fans with a more competitive and meaningful matchup.

Ultimately, the Gators’ decision to schedule Long Island has been widely panned, and fans are eagerly awaiting more substantial and exciting matchups. As the team navigates one of the toughest schedules in the country, fans expect to see more competitive and meaningful games, rather than early-season snoozefests that fail to deliver any real excitement or value.
