The Texas Longhorns have made a significant move in the 2025 offseason, hiring former West Virginia head coach Neal Brown to their coaching staff. According to reports from Anwar Richardson of OrangeBloods, Brown’s exact role has yet to be announced, but his expertise on the offensive side of the ball is expected to be a major asset to the Longhorns.
Brown, 44, was relieved of his duties as head coach of West Virginia at the end of the 2024 regular season, following a 6-6 record. During his six-year tenure with the Mountaineers, Brown compiled a 37-35 overall record. Notably, West Virginia running backs coach Chad Scott, who was recently hired by Texas in the same capacity, took the reins as interim head coach for the Mountaineers’ bowl game against Memphis.
While the specifics of Brown’s role with the Longhorns have yet to be disclosed, it is likely that his experience as an offensive specialist will be leveraged, particularly in the development of the quarterback position. Brown’s background includes stints as head coach at Troy, as well as offensive coordinator roles with Kentucky and Texas Tech. His work with quarterbacks at these stops makes it plausible that Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian sought to bring Brown on board due to his expertise in this area.
The Longhorns are familiar with Brown’s coaching style, having faced him four times during his tenure as head coach at West Virginia. Brown’s Mountaineers secured one victory against Texas in the Big 12, while the Longhorns emerged victorious in the remaining three matchups.
As the Longhorns prepare for the 2025 season, they will face a formidable opponent in their opening game, taking on the defending national champion Ohio State Buckeyes in Columbus on Saturday, August 30. The addition of Neal Brown to the coaching staff is expected to provide a significant boost to the team’s offensive capabilities, and his experience will undoubtedly be valuable as the Longhorns navigate the challenges of the upcoming season.
