Max Verstappen has cast doubt on Red Bull’s prospects for a dominant performance at this weekend’s Dutch Grand Prix, admitting the team faces a tough challenge at his home circuit. The reigning Formula 1 champion, who has triumphed at Zandvoort in three of the last four years, expressed concerns about the team’s pace following a disappointing outing at the Hungarian Grand Prix earlier this month.
In Hungary, Verstappen endured one of his worst weekends of the 2025 season, struggling with a lackluster car from the outset. The Dutchman qualified a lowly eighth and slipped to ninth in the race, a far cry from his usual front-running form. Now, as Formula 1 returns from its summer break, Verstappen is tempering expectations for Red Bull at the tight and twisty Zandvoort circuit.
“It was not great in Budapest,” Verstappen admitted in a pre-race press conference. “I hope we can be closer to the front here, but I don’t think this is going to be our best track in the remainder of the calendar. The low-speed and medium-speed corners are probably a little bit more difficult for us.”
The 27-year-old suggested that Red Bull’s RB21 car performs better on tracks with high-speed corners, which are in short supply at Zandvoort. However, he hinted that forecasted rain could play into Red Bull’s hands, potentially shaking up the order. “There might be some wet weather coming in as well,” Verstappen noted. “That always creates a bit of chaos, so we just need to see what happens.”
Red Bull’s lackluster performance in Hungary allowed rivals like McLaren and Mercedes to close the gap in both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships.
