EXCLUSIVE: Former Ozzy Osbourne Guitarist Jake E. Lee Shares Heartbreaking Final Text Message from the Late Black Sabbath Icon

In a poignant tribute following the sudden passing of heavy metal legend Ozzy Osbourne, former guitarist Jake E. Lee has revealed the touching final text message he received from the Prince of Darkness just weeks before his death. The message, sent shortly after their emotional reunion at Black Sabbath’s farewell concert, highlights a long-overdue reconciliation between the two musicians who hadn’t spoken in nearly four decades.

Ozzy Osbourne, the iconic frontman of Black Sabbath and solo artist extraordinaire, died on July 22, 2025, at the age of 76 from a heart attack, as confirmed by his death certificate. The news has sent shockwaves through the music world, with tributes pouring in from fellow artists, fans, and industry figures mourning the loss of a pioneer who defined heavy metal.

Lee, 68, who served as Osbourne’s guitarist from 1982 to 1987, shared the message on social media via his band Red Dragon Cartel’s Facebook page. “Still processing it. The finality of it hits me in waves,” Lee wrote. “This was a text I got from him as I was sitting in an airport headed back home two weeks ago.” The post, dated July 23, 2025, has garnered thousands of reactions from fans devastated by the timing of the revelation.

The text from Osbourne reads: “Hi jake im so sorry i couldnt spend more time with you on the weekend but it was really caotic ,i would really like to see you when i eventually get back TO LA just to shoot the shit its been so long since we saw each other , where have are you living these days , because the last thing i herd was you were living in Las Vegas . I will text you when I eventually get back to LA and we must hook up. Much love and respect, OZZY.” In a follow-up, Osbourne added, “How did the gig go for you on Saturday i really hope you had fun anyway.”

The exchange came after the “Back To The Beginning” show on July 5, 2025, at Villa Park in Birmingham, England – Osbourne’s hometown. Billed as Black Sabbath’s final performance, the event reunited the original lineup of Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward for a historic set. Supported by heavyweights like Metallica, Pantera, Slayer, Gojira, and Anthrax, the concert also featured a mini-set from Osbourne and special guests, including Lee.

Lee’s invitation to the show was extended by Tom Morello, the Rage Against the Machine guitarist who served as musical director. Morello insisted on Lee’s participation, reportedly saying he “couldn’t see this going on without Jake E. Lee in there somewhere.” Despite not having worked with Osbourne since 1987, Lee accepted, marking their first face-to-face meeting in 37 years. During the performance, Lee joined for covers of his era’s classics like “The Ultimate Sin” and “Shot In The Dark,” paying homage to his contributions on Osbourne’s albums Bark at the Moon (1983) and The Ultimate Sin (1986).

Their history dates back to the early ’80s when Lee replaced the late Randy Rhoads in Osbourne’s solo band, following Black Sabbath’s initial split. Together, they toured extensively and crafted some of Osbourne’s most enduring hits from that period. However, they fell out of contact after Lee departed in 1987 amid reported tensions, later revealed by Osbourne in a 2022 interview as influenced by drummer Randy Castillo.

The duo’s paths nearly crossed again last year when Lee was shot three times outside his Las Vegas home in October 2024 while walking his dog. Miraculously, he made a full recovery, and Osbourne publicly expressed shock and support, stating, “It’s been 37 years since I’ve seen Jake E. Lee, but that still doesn’t take away from the shock of hearing what happened to him. It’s just another senseless act of gun violence. I send my thoughts to him and his beautiful daughter, Jade. I just hope he’ll be OK.”

The “Back To The Beginning” reunion provided a chance to mend fences, though the chaotic nature of the event limited their time together. Lee’s decision to participate, despite ongoing health challenges like arthritis in his wrist from the shooting, underscored his respect for Osbourne. In pre-show interviews, Lee reflected on the significance, saying, “No matter how he is, or how well his singing is, he deserves a final farewell. I’m happy to be a part of it.”

Osbourne’s death, just 17 days after the concert, has amplified the emotional weight of the message. The singer had been battling health issues for years, including Parkinson’s disease and spinal damage, but powered through for what would become his last performance. His family announced his passing in a statement: “It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning. He was with his family and surrounded by love. We ask everyone to respect our family privacy at this time.” Signed by Sharon, Jack, Kelly, Aimee, and Louis Osbourne, the note captured the profound grief of a family that had shared Osbourne’s triumphs and struggles with the world via the reality TV show The Osbournes.

Tributes have flooded in from across the music spectrum. Black Sabbath’s Iommi reflected on the final show, noting Osbourne “really just held out to do that show.” Zakk Wylde, another former Osbourne guitarist, shared memories of their close bond. Even non-metal icons like Elton John, Alice Cooper, and Billie Joe Armstrong have paid homage, emphasizing Osbourne’s enduring influence.

For Lee, the text serves as a bittersweet reminder of what might have been. The planned meet-up in Los Angeles will never occur, but the words – filled with regret, warmth, and a desire to reconnect – encapsulate the humanity behind the heavy metal madness. As fans continue to process the loss of a genre-defining figure, Lee’s sharing of this private moment offers a deeply personal glimpse into Osbourne’s final days, reminding us that even legends cherish old friendships.
