Sabalenka Overpowers Sramkova in Dominant Wuhan Opener, Eyes Fourth Title Defense

World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka wasted no time reclaiming her throne at the Dongfeng Voyah Wuhan Open, dismantling qualifier Rebecca Sramkova 6-2, 6-1 in a clinical second-round performance on Wednesday. The three-time defending champion, returning from a well-earned break following her US Open triumph, looked sharp and untroubled on the hard courts of the Optics Valley International Tennis Centre, extending her impeccable record at the event to 18-0.

Sabalenka, the 27-year-old Belarusian powerhouse, entered the match as a towering favorite—bookmakers pegging her at 1/20 odds to advance—and she delivered in style. After a brief adjustment period in the opening games, the top seed unleashed her signature blend of blistering groundstrokes and aggressive net approaches, breaking Sramkova’s serve four times en route to a straight-sets victory that lasted just 72 minutes. “It’s great to be back in Wuhan; this place feels like home,” Sabalenka said post-match, flashing her trademark grin. “I took some time off to recharge, and it paid off today. Rebecca fought hard, but I was dialed in from the start.”

The encounter marked the first career meeting between the pair, with Sramkova entering on a high after her gritty first-round upset over No. 13 seed Anna Kalinskaya, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. The 26-year-old Slovakian, ranked No. 45, has enjoyed a resurgent 2025 campaign, reaching the quarterfinals in Monterrey and notching career wins over top players like Ons Jabeur. Yet, her 0-6 lifetime record against top-10 opponents loomed large, and she struggled to find rhythm against Sabalenka’s relentless power. Sramkova tallied just 14 winners to Sabalenka’s 28 and converted only 1 of 5 break-point opportunities, her serve undermined by 22 unforced errors.

For Sabalenka, this win is more than just another box ticked—it’s a statement of intent in a stacked draw that includes potential clashes with eighth seed Elena Rybakina in the quarterfinals and a possible semifinal against Iga Swiatek. Fresh off defending her US Open crown in September, where she outlasted Amanda Anisimova 6-3, 7-6(3) in the final, Sabalenka skipped events in Guadalajara and Beijing to prioritize recovery. “I didn’t want to rush back too soon,” she admitted earlier this week. “My body’s feeling strong now, and that’s all that matters.”

Sramkova, meanwhile, departs Wuhan with $83,250 in prize money and valuable experience against the elite. “Aryna is on another level—her ball striking is insane,” the qualifier reflected courtside. “I gave it everything, but today wasn’t my day. I’ll take the positives from beating Kalinskaya and build on that.”

With the third round looming, Sabalenka advances to face the winner of Liudmila Samsonova and Sofia Kenin, a matchup she should navigate comfortably based on her 91% implied win probability from predictive models. As the final WTA 1000 of the season, the Wuhan Open carries extra weight for year-end rankings and Finals qualification, and Sabalenka—already locked in as the top seed for Riyadh—appears primed to add a fourth trophy to her collection here.

The action continues Thursday with high-stakes third-round battles, including Coco Gauff vs. the winner of Moyuka Uchijima’s opener and Jasmine Paolini vs. Yue Yuan. For Sabalenka, the path to history remains wide open, and if her form is any indication, the “Queen of Wuhan” is far from dethroned.
