Alice Robinson delivered a powerhouse second run to claim back-to-back giant slalom wins and snatch the discipline lead, but all eyes were also on Mikaela Shiffrin, who stormed from 3rd after run one to finish 6th (+1.62) in treacherous, snow-filled conditions on the Flying Mile.
The New Zealander stopped the clock in 2:16.18 to beat Croatia’s Zrinka Ljutic by 0.94 seconds and Canada’s Valerie Grenier by exactly one second, while pre-race GS leader Julia Scheib (AUT) suffered a heartbreaking crash in the opening run. Yet it was Shiffrin’s fight through worsening visibility and soft snow that added extra electricity to an already chaotic day, reminding the alpine world that the five-time overall champion is rapidly rounding into top GS form ahead of the heart of the season.
Starting with bib 2, Shiffrin posted the third-fastest first run (+0.49) despite heavy snowfall, then gained ground on the leaders in the final sector of run two to secure her second top-6 GS result in as many weekends. The result keeps the American firmly inside the overall World Cup top 3 and signals that her giant slalom speed – often overshadowed by her slalom dominance – is clicking at exactly the right time.
